Schmidt Vocal Arts (SVA) is pleased to announce the second annual Schmidt Vocal Competition Nationals, held in partnership with Sarasota Opera. This annual event for U.S. high school students, funded by the William E. Schmidt Foundation, sees 400+ singers compete each year – this season for more than $650K in cash awards and scholarships – just at the critical point in their early careers when they begin to look toward training on a professional level. SVA will hold sixteen day-long regional competitions throughout the 2022-23 season in locations from coast to coast, and the top three winners of each – as well as from an independent, virtual cohort – will be invited to compete in the national competition, hosted by Sarasota Opera in the company’s William E. Schmidt Opera Theatre from June 2-4, 2023. Celebrated judges for the national competition will be soprano Alyson Cambridge, Cincinnati Opera Artistic Director Evans Mirageas, and Detroit Opera Associate Artistic Director/soprano Christine Goerke.

Schmidt Vocal Arts Master Class - Three singers from the Semi-Final round will be chosen to sing in a master class with pianist/coach Margo Garrett, tenor Stanford Olsen, and soprano Beth Roberts.

Final Round of Schmidt Vocal Competition - up to 16 Finalists will perform on the Sarasota Opera stage and compete for cash awards, including $10,000 for First Place, $7,500 for Second Place, and $5,000 for Third Place. The Final Round will be adjudicated by celebrated judges soprano Alyson Cambridge, Cincinnati Opera Artistic Director Evans Mirageas, and Detroit Opera Associate Artistic Director/soprano Christine Goerke. An Awards Ceremony will follow after the judges deliberate.
