Madama Butterfly

From her little house on a hill overlooking the Nagasaki port, with a little boy at her side, Butterfly awaits the return of her beloved. Three years earlier, at the tender age of fifteen, she married Pinkerton, a Lieutenant in the United States Navy, and now he’s returned to break her heart. Filled with Puccini’s most expansive melodies, Madama Butterfly is at the top of a very short list of most performed and best loved operas of all times.

Running time: 2 hours and 55 minutes with two intermissions

The Italian Girl in Algiers

Lindoro’s attempts to escape Mustafà, the Bey of Algiers, have all been in vain. To top it off, he is now faced with a hand-me-down bride instead of his beloved, Isabella, who has gone missing. But a unique turn of events brings Isabella right where she needs to be to save her lost fiancé. And she knows exactly what to do to get them out of this bind.

Running time: 2 hours and 52 minutes with one intermission

Dialogues of the Carmelites

Set during the French Revolution’s infamous “Reign of Terror,” follow the story of Blanche de la Force as she dedicates her life to God’s service by joining a Carmelite order. As the story unfolds, the revolution threatens to destroy all that’s most sacred to the nuns. Blanche’s journey will lead her to learn the true meaning of faith.

The Love of Three Kings

One of opera’s most passionate stories has music to match in this early twentieth century masterpiece. Forced to marry Manfredo, the son of the man who conquered her country, Princess Fiora’s heart belongs to Avito. The two lovers have been meeting in secret, but they are playing a dangerous game, as the blind King Archibaldo grows suspicious.

The Little Mermaid
The School of Russian Ballet presents The Little Mermaid, an original ballet choreographed by Vadim Fedotov. It is based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. The production will feature guest artists Sergey Sidoreskiey and Olga Golitsa, principal dancers from the National Ballet of the Ukraine, and Douglas Horn from the United States. Already a Sarasota Opera tradition—now in its 4th year—A Taste of Downtown showcases some of the best downtown Sarasota restaurants, who come together in a celebration of food and wine. The event benefits our Youth Opera program, and takes place at the Sarasota Opera House.

Rootabaga Country

After a nationwide search, we are proud to announce that composer/librettist Rachel J. Peters has been chosen to compose Sarasota Youth Opera’s new commission—Rootabaga Country. Ms. Peters explains that the work has a “sincere message of tolerance and inclusiveness in a cultural climate where the simple act of growing up is more confusing than ever before.”

This adaptation of Carl Sandburg’s 1922 Rootabaga Stories will have its world premiere by Sarasota Youth Opera in November 2017.

The Opera Gala

Location:The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota, 6:30pm

The annual Opera Gala celebrates the beginning of Sarasota Opera’s Winter Festival. You will experience a performance by our 2018 Winter Festival Principal Artists, and live music for dancing. This is our largest fundraiser of the season, so we encourage you to invite your friends and put together a table. Patron sponsorships are also available with benefits to include name recognition on invitations and programs, preferred seating and a special thank you party.
